Scotch whisky reviews. Mostly.

Octomore 6 Year (2004), Futures II “The Beast”

The second installment in the Octomore Futures line, claiming a staggering 167ppm peat content. My understanding is that this was a distillery-only release, limited to 9600 bottles.

Whisky: Octomore 6 Year (2004), Futures II “The Beast”
Country/Region: Scotland/Islay
Cask: Bourbon
ABV: 60.5%
Age: 6 Years (Distilled September 2004, Bottled April 2011)

Nose: Dark, warm caramel. Musty. Vanilla. Sherry notes.
Palate: Sweet, dark fruit. Baking spices. Biscuit. Salty. Peat. Vanilla. Mouthwatering.
Finish: Salty, sweet. Peat. Smoke. Vanilla. Pepper.

Score: 8

Mental Image: Decadent Islay fruit pie by the sea.

Lovely and decadent. Hard to imagine this was aged purely in ex-bourbon casks. I swear there’s at least a wine cask finish. Even the color tells this story. While this is an absolutely lovely whisky, I did not find it overly interesting. For the right price, this would be an exceptional bottle, but at its current prices there are more interesting releases.

This was tasted as part of a Bruichladdich/Octomore tasting put on by Dramfool.
